The regimental books of the 24th New
York Cavalry consist of two
bound volumes held at the National Archives in Washington, DC. These
volumes were created by the regiment
during the war. One volume contains the "morning reports" for companies
B and I. The other is
called the "Descriptive Book." The Descriptive Book contains a wealth
of information on each of the men who served in
companies B, F, I, K, L, and M. Although it is labeled "A-M" on the
spine, the book does not cover the other companies. The missing
information, however, can be reconstructed from other
sources. One such alternative source is the regimental books for
the 1st Provisional New York Cavalry. On June 17, 1865, shortly
before the men were mustered out of service, the 24th New York Cavalry
and the 10th New York Cavalry were consolidated together into the 1st
Provisional New York Cavalry. Each company was integrated into
the corresponding company of the other regiment. The National
Archives appears to
possess complete regimental books for the 1st Provisional New York
Cavalry. These books do not indicate which regiment the
individual men belonged to originally (24th or 10th) but using
information from other sources it is generally possible to determine
this.
So far, I have abstracted all the information concerning the men of
Company "M." Over time, I hope to do the same for the
remaining companies.
Update: This past summer
(2005) I took high-resolution digital photos of every page in the
Regimental Books for both the 24th New York Cavalry and the 1st
Provisional New York Cavalry. I will be happy to look up
individual soldiers in these records upon request. I will also
consider sending digital images of the pertinent records.
